The Copenhagen Children's School of Art ( Billedskolen i Tvillingehallen ) was founded in 1990. The art school offers art classes to children and young people living in the local community.
The students are organised in groups according to age and the students are from 7 to 19 years old. At the moment there are 32 classes a week with 12 pupils in each class (384) Their parents pay for approx. one third of the expenses of the classes. Weekend workshops are open to families once a month.
Every year the school also offers 65 visual art projects as a free service to the primary and the lower secondary schools. Every year 1500 pupils have this great experience.
These projects are short intensive courses of 2 -3 or 4 days from 9a.m. to 1p.m. The courses are concluded with an exhibition. The projects are often developed in collaboration with the creative neighboring schools (music and theater), the local museums or other cultural institutions.
At regular intervals we take initiative to larger projects and cultural events, where other groups and institutions are invited: Projects for summer holidays, cooperation with educational institutions and the museums of the city. Being a centre of knowledge, courses, seminars and meetings are being held for art teachers in order to communicate our experiences and create new relations in the work with children, art and education.
Teaching is conducted by a large group of professional artists very experienced in teaching and in visual art projects for schools the teachers are supported by teaching assistants.
